It is celebrated two days after Diwali and is therefore called “Bhai” meaning “brother” and “Dooj” meaning “second”.

I am always amazed our enriched culture that define who we are !! Just seen UK Prime minister as Hindu !! Each festival we celebrate bring so much cohesiveness and help us changed our aptitude and approach towards life . One of most loving tradition that binds us together is love and affection bond between brother and sister . Now we stay in USA past 25 years and observed strong relationship between father as mother vy celebrating Fathers day and Mother’s day .

This is really beautiful . But I didn’t come across a day dedicated to loving relationship between brother and sister . This doesn’t means the people /culture who don’t celebrate festival lacks strong relationship . Yes as human being we need reminder to keep our relationship and hence in Hindu religion we celebrate brother and sister day 3 times a year ( Bhaiya Dooj during major festival Holi , Diwali and Raksha Bandhan .

यह वाकई बहुत ही खूबसूरत है। लेकिन मुझे भाई और बहन के बीच प्यार भरे रिश्ते के लिए समर्पित एक दिन नहीं मिला। इसका मतलब यह नहीं है कि जो लोग /संस्कृति त्योहार नहीं मनाते हैं, उनमें मजबूत संबंधों का अभाव है। हां, एक इंसान के रूप में हमें अपने रिश्ते को बनाए रखने के लिए अनुस्मारक की आवश्यकता होती है और इसलिए हिंदू धर्म में हम साल में 3 बार भाई और बहन का दिन मनाते हैं (प्रमुख त्योहार होली, दिवाली और रक्षा बंधन )

The festival of Bhai Dooj is known by many names across the country. These are Bhaiya Dooj, “Bhatra Dwithiya”, “Bhai Phota”, “Bhau Beej”, “Bhai Dwitiya”, “Bhathru Dwithiya”, and more.

There is a unique understanding between a brother and a sister. They are the best friends of each other, protectors of each other, admirers of each other, secret sharers of each other and has unconditional love for each other.

It is difficult to decode the feelings, emotions and love between siblings. However, there are special days or occasions that are dedicated to strengthening the love between a brother and a sister. Bhaiya Dooj is one such occasion that can define the eternal love between different siblings (brother and sister). This wonderful festival is an important occasion where sisters pray to God for the longevity, well-being and prosperity of their beloved brother. The occasion occurs after the two days of the Diwali festival. According to the Gregorian calendar, the occasion occurs on the 2nd day of the Shukla Paksha of the Kartika month which falls between October and November. Origin, Meaning and Significance of Bhaiya Dooj

Origin- Bhaiya Dooj/Bhai Dooj, Bhau-Beej/Bhai Phonta is a festival which is celebrated among Hindus of India, Nepal and other countries on the second lunar day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Kartika month of Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar. The occasion falls on the last day of the five day long celebrations of Diwali or Tihar festival. It is also celebrated as “Yama Dwitiya” in the southern parts of India.

There are few Hindu mythological based stories related to the origin of this auspicious day. According to the one legend, Lord Krishna visited his sister, Subhadra after killing demon Narkasur. Her sister gave a warm welcome to him and made the occasion really special through flowers and sweets. Subhadra also applied the ceremonial “tilak” on the forehead of her brother, Krishna and hence the festival of “Bhai Dooj” was born from there.

Another legend revolves around the story of Yama, the God of Death and his sister Yamuna. It is believed that he met his beloved sister on Dwitheya, the second day after the new moon and thus the occasion began to be celebrated as “Yamadwitheya” or “Yamadvitiya” across the country from that day.

Meaning and Significance- The festival of Bhai Dooj has a literal meaning attached to it. It is made up of two words namely- “Bhai” meaning brother and “Dooj” meaning the second day after the new moon which is a day of its celebration.

The day holds the special significance into the lives of a brother and a sister. It is an auspicious occasion that celebrates the strong bonding between two opposite sex siblings. Sisters invite their brothers to visit their place and prepare the beloved dishes for them. Sisters also pray to God for the well-being and longevity of their brothers against all the evils and bad fortune. In return, brothers follow their responsibilities of caring and loving their sisters.

सभी देशवासियों को.. भाई-बहन के स्नेह और अटूट विश्वास के प्रतीक, सनातन परंपरा के वाहक, पावन पर्व ‘भैया दूज’ की हार्दिक बधाई। प्रेम, समर्पण व कर्तव्यपरायणता का यह पर्व सभी के जीवन में अपार खुशियां लाए, यही कामना है।

शास्त्रों के अनुसार भगवान सूर्य नारायण और संज्ञा के दो संतानें- एक पुत्र यमराज और दूसरी पुत्री यमुना थी।

मगर एक समय ऐसा आया जब संज्ञा सूर्य का तेज सहन कर पाने में असमर्थ होने के कारण उत्तरी ध्रुव में छाया बनकर रहने लगी। जिसके कारण ताप्ती नदी और शनिदेव का जन्म हुआ।

उत्तरी ध्रुव में बसने के बाद संज्ञा (छाया) का यम व यमुना के साथ व्यवहार में अंतर आ गया। इससे व्यथित होकर यम ने अपनी नगरी यमपुरी बसाई।

वहीं यमुना अपने भाई यम को यमपुरी में पापियों को दंड देते देख दु:खी होती, इसलिए वह गोलोक में निवास करने लगीं लेकिन यम और यमुना दोनों भाई-बहन में बहुत स्नेह था।

इसी तरह समय व्यतीत होता रहा, फिर अचानक एक दिन यम को अपनी बहन यमुना की याद आई।
.
यमराज अपनी बहन यमुना से बहुत प्रेम करते थे, लेकिन काम की व्यस्तता के चलते अपनी बहन से मिलने नहीं जा पाते थे।
.
फिर कार्तिक शुक्ल पक्ष द्वितीया के दिन यमुना ने भाई यमराज को भोजन के लिए निमंत्रण देकर, उन्हें अपने घर आने के लिए वचनबद्ध कर लिया।
.
ऐसे में यमराज ने सोचा कि मैं तो प्राणों को हरने वाला हूं। मुझे कोई भी अपने घर नहीं बुलाना चाहता। बहन जिस सद्भावना से मुझे बुला रही है, उसका पालन करना मेरा धर्म है।
.
बहन के घर आते समय यमराज ने नरक निवास करने वाले जीवों को मुक्त कर दिया। यमराज को अपने घर आया देखकर यमुना की खुशी का ठिकाना नहीं रहा।
.
यमुना ने स्नान के बाद पूजन करके, स्वादिष्ट व्यंजन परोसकर यमराज को भोजन कराया।
.
यमुना द्वारा किए गए इस आतिथ्य से यमराज ने प्रसन्न होकर बहन को वर मांगने का आदेश दिया।

फिर यमुना ने कहा कि, ‘हे भद्र! आप प्रति वर्ष इसी दिन मेरे घर आया करो और मेरी तरह जो बहन इस दिन अपने भाई को आदर-सत्कार करके टीका करे, उसे तुम्हारा भय न रहे।’
.
यमराज ने तथास्तु कहकर यमुना को अमूल्य वस्त्राभूषण देकर यमलोक की ओर प्रस्थान किया।
.
तभी से इस दिन से ये पर्व मनाने की परंपरा चली आ रही है। इसी कारण ऐसी मान्यता है कि भाईदूज के दिन यमराज तथा यमुना का पूजन भी अवश्य करना चाहिए।

धर्म ग्रंथों के अनुसार, कार्तिक शुक्ल द्वितीया के दिन यमुना ने अपने भाई यम को आदर-सत्कार स्वरूप वरदान प्राप्त किया था, जिस वजह से भाईदूज को यम द्वितीया के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

दरअसल यमराज के वर अनुसार जो व्यक्ति इस दिन यमुना में स्नान करके, यम का पूजन करेगा, मृत्यु के पश्चात उसे यमलोक में नहीं जाना पड़ेगा।

वहीं सूर्य की पुत्री यमुना समस्त कष्टों का निवारण करने वाली देवी स्वरूपा मानी गई हैं। इस कारण यम द्वितीया के दिन यमुना नदी में स्नान करने और यमुना व यमराज की पूजा करने का विशेष महत्व है।

इस दिन बहन अपने भाई को तिलक कर उसकी लंबी उम्र के लिए हाथ जोड़कर यमराज से प्रार्थना भी करती हैं।

पुराणों के अनुसार, इस दिन की गई पूजा से यमराज प्रसन्न होकर मनोवांछित फल प्रदान करते हैं।
